We met in a tea shop in Jersey City, NJ where Liz was serving tea and Holly was a customer. After learning about the negative impacts caused by the trillion+ paper and plastic bags our planet consumes each year, we decided to create a reusable bag brand capable of changing the way people shopped. Using tips from the tea shop tip jar, some family funding, and our combined creativity, we launched Bag the Habit in 2007 with a single bag design and a 3-page website.
From the beginning, we were lucky to have the support of our local community. Working with a group of over 40 artists, we put on an exhibition called ‘Reduce’ in order to educate people about the impact of disposables and raise awareness about our new brand. The artists each painted reusable shopping bags that were auctioned for charity, and Bag the Habit successfully sold out of it’s first batch of inventory.
As bags continued to sell, we had to learn the in’s and out’s of product design and manufacturing (lots of growing pains included). We expanded into custom bag offerings, and started to produce reusables for some of the world's biggest brands, and in 2009, we developed a signature 100% recycled fabric which is is made from plastic bottles and textile scraps.
Our travels took us around the world and back, establishing partnerships with eco-friendly supply partners on several continents. Lucky for us, customers started coming from around the world too!
While it was great to see change taking root, we knew that real progress in the reusable movement would come from the next generation. In 2012 we launched We Create the Future, a school program that teaches kids about the impact of disposable products and the importance of choosing sustainable habits. Each child in our program paints their own reusable bag and is given tools to educate their family about what they've learned. The energy in the classrooms is contagious.
We continue on our journey with deep gratitude for all of the people and companies who support Bag the Habit's mission. Special thanks to our customers, who ensure each Bag the Habit bag that goes out into the world has a long, purposeful life of reuse. :)
